27.01.2018__________

January 27 is the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust.

It is worth remembering that 'Holocaust’ is translated from Greek as ‘whole burnt’ and means systematic persecution and genocide of the Jews by Nazi Germany and collaborators during1933-1945. In a broader sense, Holocaust is systematic persecution and destruction of people based on their race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation or genetic type as inferior and harmful. On that day in 1945 the troops of the First Ukrainian Front entered the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau near Polish Auschwitz. In the modern world this camp became a symbol of Nazi crimes. On November 1, 2005 the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution No. 60/7 which states that ‘… the Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities, will forever be a warning to all people of the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice’.
At the state level Ukraine honors the victims of the tragedy since 2012. More than 1.5 million people became Holocaust victims. The largest mass executions of the Jews in Ukraine are Babin Yar (Kiev) - more than 100 000, Bogdanovka of Odessa region - more than 40 000, Drohobych Yar (Kharkov) - about 20 000, Kamenets-Podolsky - 23600, Dalnik of Odessa region - about 18 000, the tract of Sosenka near Rovno - more than 17000 victims.
