International Year of Indigenous Languages

International Years is one of the types of special events and memorable dates of the United Nations. The first international year was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1959. In 2019, the United Nations declared the year “Indigenous Languages” to draw attention to the acute problem of the loss of these languages. Indigenous peoples are peoples living in the multi-ethnic societies of independent countries, they are descendants of those who inhabited the country or geographical area of which it is a part. In Ukraine, the indigenous peoples are Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks and Greeks of the Azov Sea. There are at least 5,000 different indigenous groups in the world, representing over 4,000 different out of 6,700 known languages that are believed to exist today. According to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, at least 40 percent of languages are endangered. Preparations for the Year will be discussed at the forum that opens in New York. To learn about the history of the peoples of the world, their languages and ethnic features, readers and guests of the library will be able to browse large exhibitions that are organized in the library's hall: “World's linguistic diversity” and “Ethno-cultural mosaic of the world”. Separately highlighted the exhibition "Ukraine, what we love her" and "Getting to know the Middle Kingdom", dedicated to the Year of China in Ukraine. Those who wish can learn more about the history, art, literature and everyday life of modern China. We recommend to read D. Dwight, "The Basics of Chinese Painting", "A Bunch of Viburnum and Plum Color", "China. Acquaintance with the ancient culture "and many other interesting publications
